With the increase in single households and the decline of large family units, there has been a notable shift towards a more individual lifestyle, leading to an increased need for community in society. This shift raises the question of how the kitchen, the hearth of the home, can serve as a tool for social transformation to address the need for community.
This thesis explores the concept of the communal kitchen as a sustainable solution to address the challenges of community cohesion, reduce household expenditure, minimise waste and energy consumption, and ultimately promote sustainable growth. Through a review of historical precedents, case studies, and contemporary practices, the thesis seeks to highlight the potential of communal kitchens as a key to social change in domestic architecture in urban contexts.
